Pectin is a soluble fiber found in most fruits and vegetables, especially in their peels. It has the property of acting as "glue" in the sense that it plays an important role in the binding of plant cells. It is often used in jams, jellies, and canned fruits. It is important to know that industrial or synthetic pectin (E440 i and E440 ii) is not beneficial for our health, while natural pectin has a wide range of useful properties

Beneficial properties of natural pectin

Pectin, which is contained in fruits and vegetables, especially apples, helps regulate cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Pectin-rich fruits maintain normal blood sugar and insulin levels, and in the case of fatty and sweet foods, pectin reduces the absorption of sugar through the intestines. It is also helpful in treating digestive problems, combating constipation, and preventing diarrhea. Some studies show that it slows down the development of cancer cells and is used in diets because it helps burn fat. Pectin has a prebiotic effect, which means it prolongs the life of beneficial bacteria and keeps them healthy. It flushes out toxins from the body by removing metals such as copper or lead, at the same time, strengthening the immune system. Along with other beneficial substances found in fruit, pectin also prevents cardiovascular problems.

Fruits and vegetables rich in pectin

Apples rank first, which is why apple pectin is most commonly used in the production of various supplements and medicines. But it is important to know that it is contained mainly in their peel. Other products rich in pectin are:
Fruits: pears, peaches, apricots, cherries, quince, oranges, grapefruit.
Vegetables: carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, peas, beans.

Moldovan desserts based on natural pectin

The TreiS brand recently entered the local market and offers fruit desserts based on natural apple pectin. For the preparation of these desserts, a unique recipe was independently developed and the necessary accreditations and permits were obtained. The desserts are made exclusively using fruits and nuts grown in Moldova. The products are free of antioxidants, preservatives, colorants, emulsifiers, flavor enhancers, stabilizers and flavorings. In 2018, two trademarks TreiS and ТриС were registered, and desserts entered the market in 2020.

Another product with a high content of natural pectin is pastila offered by MoBerry (it contains various fruits and berries: raspberry, chokeberry, blackberry), as well as by other several small local brands such as Fruit Yummi, Tanny's Sweets or Freya brand from Transnistria. The elastic part of this dessert comes from fruits rich in pectin such as apples, plums, pears, peaches and quince.
