Moldova is a country with developed wine tourism, taking into account that winemaking and millennial traditions of wine production are the engine that stimulates the development of the entire tourism sector of the country. In recent years, more than 175,000 tourists visited our country, and the number of wineries that have the necessary conditions for their accommodation has increased from 9 to 18. Thanks to the programs for the development of wine tourism in Moldova, local producers were able to modernize their tasting rooms and recieved consultations in designing the accomodation facilities and the locations for corporate events.
We present some of the major local wineries that, over the past few years, have achieved significant progress and have become important actors of the Moldovan wine-making sector. Wine production at many of these enterprises began in Soviet times, and the technologies used in the past were integrated and adapted to modern modern quality standards.
In 2014–2015, a group of private investors decided to revive the old enterprise by investing in modern technologies, re-employing most of the former employees and started to buy raw materials. Despite the fact that initially they had to deal only with the sale of bulk wine, the gained knowledge and experience that allowed them to start the production of bottled wine. Also, the winery received consulting services from one of the best regional experts, oenologist Lorena Diaconu-Stoian, who represents the company "Halewood Crates" from Romania.
Located in the village of Lingura, Cantemir, until recently the company was mainly engaged in the production of bulk wine. However, several years ago, they started the modernization process which led to the production of bottled wine. In 2018, the producer launched Libera and Genesis series and managed to win its first medals at world-famous international contests. The location on the highway Chisinau-Giurgiulesti, as well as the proximity to other wineries on the western wine route prompted the company to start developing tourism infrastructure. Soon a tasting room will be created in the production complex.
A family business, located in the village of Razeni, Ialoveni, that has been active for 25 years and in recent years has undergone an extensive modernization process, inspired by Doina Bors, the daughter of the founder and owner of the winery. The producer has updated its base for the production of wine, as well as refrigeration, pressing and pumping equipment. In the period from 2014 to 2018, the winery made a qualitative leap and released 4 new series of wines: 6n, Artitude, Black Pearl, Bona Flores, which were awarded medals at local and international competitions. The company's vineyards occupy an area of 150 hectares.
A family business from the village of Milestii Mici, Ialoveni, owned by Efim and Nadejda Agrici and their three daughters Ala, Tatiana and Felicia. The basis of the winery was laid in 1958 and in the 60s the enterprise used to produce only bulk wine. In 2000, the head of the family, Efim Agrici, bought the winery and started the modernization process. Now the company receives processed grapes from the local farmers and creates jobs in the village. It also support the local football team. Since 2016, the company has reoriented its strategy and started the production of bottled wine. In 2019 Agrici Wines has already started exporting its products to the EU and China. The winery is in the process of reconstruction, it plans upgrade its infrastructure and in the future will be included in the wine tourist route.
The winery was founded in 1995 on the site of an old wine factory and completely changed its business model. They have upgraded the production line and now manufactures quality bottled wines, producing more than 8 million liters per year. The products are mainly exported. The company is located in the south-eastern region of the country, in the village of Salcuta, Causeni, in the wine region Stefan Voda.
Vinaria din Vale
One of the most outstanding wineries with its own vineyards that occupy more than 1000 hectares and offers a large variety of bottled wines. It is located in the southern part of Moldova, in the region Valul lui Traian, with protected geographical indication. Vineyards are distinguished by a favorable climate and fertile varieties and provide impeccable quality of grapes. There are cultivated European grape varieties such as: Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Traminer, Muscat, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and local varieties: Feteasca Albă, Feteasca Negră.
Vinuri de Comrat
One of the oldest and most experienced wineries in Gagauzia, which in 2016 embarked on an extensive process of modernization of equipment and methods of wine production. Thanks to this process, in just three years the company managed to raise the level of quality to unprecedented heights and won more than 20 medals at international competitions. In August 2018, the winery officially launched the tourist component.
These wineries were visited as part of the “Redescoperă Drumul Vinului” wine tour, which was initiated by the National Tourism Association of Moldova (ANTRIM) with the support of the Moldova Competitiveness Project, funded by USAID, the Government of Sweden and the National Office of Vine and Wine.
